Film - Queendom (2023) - Alkmaar Pride
As part of Alkmaar Pride, Filmhuis Alkmaar is screening Queendom, one of the strangest and most moving documentaries you will ever see. A gay Russian performance artist uses social media, his identity, and a series of remarkable costumes to quietly confront prejudice, war, and police violence.
His story testifies to indescribable courage and strength and the unstoppable desire to be yourself at all costs and to continue believing in that. This is what the protagonist of the documentary, Gena Marvin (born Gennadiy Chebotarev), lives for. They find themselves in the uncomfortable situation of feeling the need to express themselves in various ways as a non-binary person to live as a performance artist. In an interview, Gena says, “Beauty is about the complete acceptance of your own reflection.”
Queendom unfolds against the backdrop of Putin's increasing power and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It premiered during The Best of IDFA on Tour 2024 and won the NEXT:WAVE Award.
