Grand March: A Historic House through a Ballroom Lens Exhibition by House of Vineyard and Amsterdam Museum
Starting from December 2, 2023, the Amsterdam Museum presents the exhibition "Grand March: A Historic House through a Ballroom Lens." This exhibition is a collaboration with House of Vineyard, the first ballroom house in the Netherlands. In the rooms of the Amsterdam Museum's location Huis Willet-Holthuysen, House of Vineyard showcases the power of ballroom culture through radical fashion interventions and art installations. The exhibition is a celebration of queerness, a testament to the resilience of the spirit, and a tribute to a group of people who refused to be invisible.
As trailblazers of the Dutch scene, House of Vineyard explores the power of ballroom, where themes such as resistance, community building, and self-expression play a significant role. For the Grand March exhibition, House of Vineyard guides the visitor through the historical spaces of Huis Willet-Holthuysen from the perspective of the contemporary ballroom scene. They achieve this by complementing the rooms of the Amsterdam mansion with installations featuring fashion, jewelry, photography, and visual arts.
Ballroom culture originated for and by Black and Latinx trans women and queer individuals in the 1970s in Harlem, New York. They resisted mainstream, often racist beauty contests by organizing balls for, with, and by LGBTQ+ people of color. During a ball, queer, trans, and cisgender individuals compete in various categories such as fashion, realness, body, and performance for trophies, cash prizes, and admiration. Balls are extravagant underground events that serve as resistance against the prevailing cisnormative society. Since the rise of these balls, ballroom has become a flourishing artistic culture. Many people active in the ballroom scene are members of a 'house,' representing a group of individuals who have chosen each other as 'family,' creating a safe home that accommodates every individual.

Vanaf 2 december 2023 presenteert het Amsterdam Museum de tentoonstelling Grand March: A Historic House through a Ballroom Lens. De tentoonstelling is een samenwerking met House of Vineyard, het eerste ballroomhuis in Nederland. In de kamers van Amsterdam Museum-locatie Huis Willet-Holthuysen toont House of Vineyard met radicale mode-interventies en kunstinstallaties de kracht van ballroomcultuur. De tentoonstelling is een viering van het queer-zijn, een getuigenis van het doorzettingsvermogen van de geest, en een eerbetoon aan een groep mensen die weigerden om onzichtbaar te zijn.
Als trailblazers van de Nederlandse scene verkent House of Vineyard de kracht van ballroom, waarin thema’s als verzet, gemeenschapsvorming en zelfexpressie een grote rol spelen. Voor de tentoonstelling Grand March. A Historic House through a Ballroom Lens neemt ballroom huis House of Vineyard de bezoeker mee door de historische ruimtes van Huis Willet-Holthuysen vanuit het perspectief van de hedendaagse ballroomscene. Ze doet dat door de ruimtes van het Amsterdamse herenhuis aan te vullen met installaties met mode, sieraden, fotografie en beeldende kunst.
Ballroom werd gevormd voor en door Zwarte en Latijns-Amerikaanse trans vrouwen en queer mensen in de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw in Harlem, New York. Zij verzetten zich tegen reguliere, veelal racistische schoonheidswedstrijden door balls te organiseren voor, met en door lhbtiq+-ers van kleur. Tijdens een ball strijden queer, trans- en cismensen in verschillende categorieën, zoals fashion, realness, body en performance, om trofeeën, geldprijzen en verering. De balls zijn uitbundige underground-evenementen, die fungeren als verzet tegen de overheersende cisnormatieve maatschappij. Sinds de opkomst van deze balls is ballroom een bloeiende artistieke cultuur. Veel mensen die actief zijn in de ballroomscene, zijn lid van een 'huis'. Hierin is een groep mensen vertegenwoordigd die elkaar gekozen heeft als 'familie', met een veilig thuis waarin ruimte is voor ieder individu.
Over House of Vineyard
Het dynamische en internationaal erkende House of Vineyard is in 2014 opgericht door Amber Vineyard. House of Vineyard is tegenwoordig meer dan een gemeenschap die balls organiseert of eraan deelneemt: het is een krachtige beweging die de ballroomcultuur binnen Nederland heeft geïntroduceerd en nog steeds verrijkt. Naast de grote bijdrage aan balls wereldwijd organiseert House of Vineyard ook het jaarlijkse Pussy Wagon Stage op Milkshake Festival en voguing-workshops in de Melkweg. Ook vervult House of Vineyard jaarlijks een onmiskenbare rol tijdens Pride Amsterdam. Op deze manier delen de leden hun kennis en de waardes binnen de ballroomscene. Dit is de eerste tentoonstelling waarin House of Vineyard als collectief een tentoonstelling co-cureert.
