History Happens Now

IHLIA LGBTI Heritage tells the story of the LGBTQ+ community through its archives. Unfortunately, our collections are never complete. We lack the stories of the material we haven't collected, as well as those of individuals and organizations that are often overlooked. Often, these are the stories of initiatives outside the capital that, on a smaller scale, make a significant difference in LGBTQ+ emancipation.

Imagine if we were to bury a time capsule now that would be opened in twenty years. What objects representing the Dutch LGBTQ+ community would we find? What do we want people to remember about our community?

The exhibition "History Happens Now" maps individuals and grassroots initiatives fighting for LGBTQ+ emancipation in the Netherlands. Each of the approximately 20 organizations from across the country has contributed to the exhibition and its accompanying catalog with its own object. Together, all these objects tell the story of the Dutch LGBTQ+ community today and the work being done today. History happens now!

IHLIA LGBTI Heritage vertelt met haar archieven het verhaal van de lhbtiq+-gemeenschap. Onze collecties zijn helaas nooit compleet. We missen de verhalen van het materiaal dat we niet hebben verzameld, maar ook die van individuen en organisaties die altijd worden onderbelicht. Vaak zijn dat de verhalen van initiatieven buiten de hoofdstad die op kleinere schaal een groot verschil maken op het gebied van lhbtiq+-emancipatie.

Stel je voor dat we nu een tijdcapsule begraven die over twintig jaar weer opengaat, welke objecten die representatief zijn voor de Nederlandse lhbtiq+-gemeenschap treffen we dan aan? Wat willen we dat mensen zich herinneren over onze gemeenschap?

De tentoonstelling History Happens Now  brengt individuen en grassrootsinitiatieven in kaart die vechten voor lhbtiq+-emancipatie in Nederland. Elke van de ongeveer 25 organisaties uit het hele land heeft met een eigen object bijgedragen aan de tentoonstelling en de bijbehorende catalogus. Al deze objecten samen vertellen het verhaal van de Nederlandse lhbtiq+-gemeenschap van nu en het werk dat vandaag de dag verricht wordt. History happens now!
