Lesbische Leesclub Pride editie

Queer books are increasingly conquering the literary landscape. This hasn't always been the case: especially lesbian storylines were long scarce, in the shadows, or often found mostly in subtext. Now, there is an increasingly rich array of stories with lesbian representation. The lesbian identity is being reclaimed, especially in times when it is greatly needed.

During this discussion, Sarah Herforth (Lesbian Reading Club) will talk with Laurie Bastemeijer and Daphne de Heer about the representation of les-bi-queers in literature with both a capital and lowercase 'l'. Which book offers them recognition and queer joy? Why is representation of your identity on paper so important, and where do we stand in this area now? And in which genres or with which storylines do we still lack representation?

**About the Speakers**

Sarah Herforth is one of the initiators of the Lesbian Reading Club, an initiative for and by lesbian and queer women and genderqueer persons. They organize book discussions and other events around books with a ‘women love women’ storyline.

Laurie Bastemeijer is an editor, Slavist, and book scholar. She is one of the compilers of the anthology "Zij/Haar: an ABC of Lesbian Literature," which is set to be published in May 2024. She writes about literature and current affairs for outlets including OneWorld, De Reactor, and Neerlandistiek.nl. She was also the editor-in-chief of online queer magazine Expreszo.

Daphne de Heer is a co-founder of the les-bi-queer publishing house Velvet Publishers and a programmer at the International Literature Festival Utrecht. She has extensive experience in the literary world as a bookseller, program creator, translator, and publisher. At Velvet Publishers, she works to ensure a broader and more joyful representation of les-bi-queer lives in Dutch-language literature.

Queer boeken veroveren steeds meer het literaire landschap. Dat is niet altijd zo geweest: vooral lesbische verhaallijnen waren lang schaars, in de schaduwen of bevonden zich veelal in de subtext. Inmiddels is er een steeds rijker aanbod van verhalen met lesbische representatie. De lesbische identiteit wordt teruggeclaimd, juist in tijden waarin dit hard nodig is.

Tijdens dit gesprek gaat Sarah Herforth (Lesbische Leesclub) in gesprek met Laurie Bastemeijer en Daphne de Heer over de representatie van les-bi-queers in literatuur met een grote én een kleine L. Welk boek biedt voor hen herkenning en queer joy? Waarom is representatie van je identiteit ook op papier zo belangrijk, en waar staan we nu op dit gebied? En in welke genres of bij welke verhaallijnen missen we nog representatie.

Ze schrijft over literatuur en actualiteit voor onder andere OneWorld, De Reactor en Neerlandistiek.nl. Ook was ze hoofdredacteur van online queer magazine Expreszo.

Daphne de Heer is medeoprichter van les-bi-queer uitgeverij Velvet Publishers en programmeur bij het Internationaal Literatuurfestival Utrecht. Ze heeft brede ervaring in de literaire wereld als boekhandelaar, programmamaker, vertaler en uitgever. Bij Velvet Publishers zet ze zich in voor een bredere en blijere representatie van les-bi-queer levens in de Nederlandstalige literatuur.
