During a two-hour walk, Henk shines a light on the LGBT community and gay history of Amsterdam. Amsterdam has attracted people to live or visit the city for centuries. For the LGBT community, this started in the 17th century, and by the 1990s, Amsterdam was even the gay capital of the world. 400 years of history. And what is the connection with Germany?
Why did all these people move to Amsterdam? Why is Amsterdam the first city in the world to have a gay monument? How did gay marriage come about?
A fascinating story with people from past centuries worth remembering. A hidden side of Amsterdam for those who want to get to know Amsterdam or are interested in this other side of Amsterdam history. We start at the gay monument behind the Westerkerk (Rembrandt was buried in this church and Queen Beatrix was married here) and end the tour on Zeedijk.
I've been giving this LGBT or gay history tour of Amsterdam for three years. As a gay man, I researched my history and the history of my gay family and found that there are many people who have contributed to my emancipation and my rights, and to the Netherlands that it is today.
I often found little information on this historical page or found it underexposed. It led me to develop this tour and share this special side of Amsterdam with you.
