Movie - A Place of Our Own (2022) - QFFU

A Place of Our Own was directed and produced by the Ektara Collective, making the film a product of a common shared vision. Made with a small budget, most crew members came from marginalized backgrounds, and despite showing interest in film production, did not have access to the field beforehand. Thus, the cast of A Place of Our Own features many of the actors’ first appearances and is an artistic expression of people who are not just subjects of the film, but also the tellers of their own story. The protagonists, for example, played a big role in writing the script and everything shown is based on their lived experiences. Because of this, the film’s slice-of-life realism is palpable in the tiniest of details and has an even stronger impact on the audience.

Shot through an intersectional, queer, feminist lens, the film does not just question discrimination against marginalised genders, but also the structures of class and caste that discrimination functions within. In telling this story, the filmmakers hope to encourage other trans and queer people to bring their stories to the screen.

A Place of Our Own werd geregisseerd en geproduceerd door de Ektara Collective. Hiermee is de film het product van een gedeelde visie. De film werd gemaakt met een klein budget. Veel crewleden komen uit een gemarginaliseerde achtergrond en hadden ondanks hun talent en interesse niet eerder toegang tot de middelen om films te maken. De cast bestaat dan ook uit veel mensen die in deze film hun debuut maakten en de film werd een artistieke expressie van mensen die niet alleen het onderwerp, maar ook de vertellers van hun eigen verhaal zijn. De protagonisten speelden bijvoorbeeld een grote rol in het schrijfproces, waardoor elke gebeurtenis gebaseerd is op geleefde ervaringen. Wellicht hierdoor is het slice-of-life realisme voelbaar in de kleinste details en kan de film een grote impact maken op het publiek. 

Door de intersectionele, queer-feministische lens waarmee de film werd geschoten, bekritiseert het niet alleen discriminatie tegen gemarginaliseerde genderidentiteiten, maar ook de structuren van klas en kasten waar deze discriminatie binnen functioneert. Met dit verhaal moedigen de makers andere trans en queer mensen aan om ook hun verhalen naar het scherm te vertalen.
