Movie - All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White (2023) - QFFU

Babatunde Apalowo, a Nigerian writer, has gained recognition for his contributions to the country’s film industry. Initially, Apalowo intended his debut feature film, All the Colours, to be an ode to the city of Lagos. However, one night, witnessing the lynching and killing of a man based on his sexuality forever changed his perspective. He realized how dangerous Lagos could be for outsiders or ‘others,’ and the film’s focus shifted to an examination of the people the city rejects. Apalowo stated, “What began as a love letter to Lagos, turned into an examination of the people the city rejects.”

The biggest challenge Apalowo faced during the process was not the fear of being sentenced (queer love in Nigeria is a criminal offense) but rather his doubt about whether, as a straight person, he could tell this story properly. However, as he recognized that his story was ultimately about love and related to the main characters through his own experiences, he gained the courage to create the film. He collaborated with many queer friends, inviting them to share their experiences, shaping the story of the film.

Babatunde Apalowo is een Nigeriaanse schrijver die bekend is door zijn belangrijke bijdrage aan de filmindustrie in het land. Apalowo’s eerste lange film All the Colours was oorspronkelijk een ode aan de stad Lagos. Maar toen hij op een nacht zag hoe een man werd gelyncht en vermoord vanwege zijn seksualiteit, veranderde zijn leven voorgoed. Hij realiseerde zich hoe gevaarlijk zijn geliefde stad was voor buitenstaanders of mensen die ‘anders’ zijn. “Wat begon als een liefdesbrief aan Lagos, veranderde in een onderzoek naar de mensen die de stad afwijst,” zei hij.

De grootste uitdaging in zijn filmproces was niet de angst om veroordeeld te worden (queer liefde is in Nigeria een strafbaar feit), maar zijn twijfel of hij als heteroseksuele man dit verhaal wel goed kon vertellen. Uiteindelijk realiseerde hij zich dat zijn verhaal over liefde gaat, en hij zich met zijn hoofdpersonen kon identificeren omdat hij liefde had ervaren vanuit al hun perspectieven. Toen pas besloot hij dit verhaal, dat tot stand kwam met de hulp van queer vrienden die hij uitnodigde om hun ervaringen met hem te delen, te verfilmen.
