Movie - Chocolate Babies (1996) - QFFU

Released in 1996, Chocolate Babies was a direct statement against the public and political engagement (or rather lack thereof) with the AIDS crisis. It was Stephen Winter’s debut film and was received very well at the festivals, even getting a standing ovation at San Francisco and opening for the Berlin Film Festival.

Despite its overwhelming critical acclaim, amazing performances, good storytelling and engagement with the HIV/AIDS crisis and Black queer lives in ‘90s New York, the film did not enjoy a wide distribution after its initial release. This is thanks to the film industry’s inaccessibility, whose distributors were simply unwilling to pick up the film. In 2021 however, the film was taken up as a Criterion Classic and now, albeit 25 years later, enjoys its rightful spot in the canon.

Chocolate Babies werd uitgebracht in 1996 en was een direct statement tegen de publieke en politieke onverschilligheid over de AIDS-crisis. Het was Stephen Winters debuutfilm en werd zeer goed ontvangen op filmfestivals: in San Francisco kreeg het een staande ovatie van het publiek en de film was zelfs de opener voor het Berlin Film Festival.

Ondanks de overweldigen positieve kritieken, geweldige performances, het goede verhaal en de behandeling van de HIV/AIDS-crisis en de Zwarte queer gemeenschap in het New York van de jaren ’90, werd de film na de eerste release niet breed gedistributeerd. Dit is te danken aan de ontoegankelijkheid en onwil van de filmindustrie destijds — distributeurs waren simpelweg niet bereid om de film op te pikken. In 2021 werd de film echter opgenomen als Criterion Classic en heeft nu, al is het 25 jaar later, zijn rechtmatige plaats in de canon.
