Movie - Maurice (1987)
The film was groundbreaking for its candid and positive portrayal of homosexuality. "Maurice" evokes the suffocating conformity of English society on the eve of World War I.
Maurice Hall (James Wilby) and Clive Durham (Hugh Grant) are studying at the University of Cambridge and fall in love. As homosexuality is illegal in post-Victorian England, they must keep their feelings for each other completely secret. After a friend is arrested for homosexuality, Clive leaves his forbidden love and marries a young woman.
Maurice continues to struggle with his identity and self-confidence, seeking the 'help' of a hypnotist to rid himself of his undeniable desires. However, Maurice is enticed by Clive's gamekeeper, Alec Scudder (Rupert Graves), an event that brings profound changes to Maurice's life.
