Movie - Otherness (2023) - QFFU

In Spanish media, the lesbian community is still drastically underrepresented. With Otherness, creators Nora Haddad Casedevall and Alba Cros Pellisé want to both highlight and fill this void in the landscape of Spanish cinema. Their film centers around this community by portraying lesbian couples in their surroundings. In doing so, they offer a space for, up until this point, unheard voices, and hope to pave the way for more inclusive representation.

Alba co-directed her first film, Las Amigas de Ágata (2015), with Laia Alabart, Laura Rius and Marta Verheyen. She has directed the documentary Resiliència (2020) for the 2020 National Culture Awards of the CoNCA and has worked with Carlos Marquès-Marcet on The Days to Come (2019). After several small projects, Otherness is her second feature-length film. Nora is a sound engineer, sociologist and musician. She began investigating the world of audible and social art with a master’s degree from the University of Barcelona and led several projects related to sound art. Currently, she works as a sound designer and sound engineer in films. Otherness is her first film as co-director and co-screenwriter.

In het Spaanse medialandschap is de lesbische gemeenschap nog drastisch ondervertegenwoordigd. Met Otherness maken de makers Nora Haddad Casadevall en Alba Cros Pellisé een begin om dit opvallende gat in het Spaanse filmlandschap te vullen. In hun film zetten ze deze gemeenschap centraal, door lesbische stellen uit hun directe omgeving te portretteren. Op deze manier bieden ze deze voorheen ongehoorde stemmen een podium, en hopen zo ruimte te maken voor meer inclusieve representatie. 

Alba co-regisseerde haar eerste film Las Amigas de Ágata (2015) met Laia Alabart, Laura Rius en Marta Verheyen. Ze regisseerde de documentaire Resiliència (2020) voor het 2020 National Culture Awards van het CoNCA en werkte samen met Carlos Marquès-Marcet in The Days to Come (2019). Na verschillende kleine projecten, is Otherness haar tweede lange documentaire. Nora is sound engineer, socioloog en muzikant. Tijdens haar masterstudie aan de Universiteit van Barcelona begon ze haar ontdekkingstocht in de wereld van audio en sociale kunst. Hieropvolgend leidde ze verscheidene projecten op het gebied van audiokunst. Momenteel werkt ze als geluidsontwerper en geluidstechnicus in films. Otherness is haar eerste film als co-regisseur en co-scriptschrijver.
