Movie - Stroking an Animal & Lezing Meerminners (2023) - QFFU

Stroking an animal – Dutch premiere – Ángel FilgueiraMariña (23) begins an intense love affair with Ada (25). When Tomás (27), a friend of both, enters the couple’s intimacy, the sexual and amorous bonds are altered and shaken. Six moments of the relationship articulate the film, thrown like flashes of light. The journey of this love triangle will lead Mariña to rethink her bonds with others and her self-care..

Ángel Filgueira is a Galician filmmaker. He studied Audiovisual Communication at University of Vigo and Master’s degree in Art Investigation at the UCLM. His films include the documentary Sevilla y Gomorra (2018) premiered at Cineuropa Film Festival (Santiago de Compostela) and his short films Burdeos – Porto,  El Cuadrado and FIN, wich were presented at Cineuroupa and Curtircuito IFF. Stroking an Animal is his first feature film and with this project he has participated in different development and work-in-progress laboratories such as Gijón FICX PRO, Abycine Lanza,  Novos Cinemas #LAB (Pontevedra) or IMPUT at S8 Film Festival (A Coruña).

Pre film: Refused Classification – Chris Elena (Australia, 12 minutes)Matt, Pam, and Amy are in love. They want to make their polyamorous relationship official, but an omnipresent MPAA censor won’t allow it – not without serious editing. Confronted with the idea that their loving relationship is considered indecent for most audiences, the family must make a choice: should they abide by the MPAA’s wishes, and possibly see relationships like theirs finally represented on screen, or should they stay true to their authentic selves? Should they conform to the system, or reject it?

This program is organised together with de Meerminners.

The film Stroking An Animal will be followed by a thought-provoking lecture on how autonomously having multiple relationships has immense radical potential. Roos Reijbroek, working as a couples therapist for polyamorists and organizer of De Meerminners, paints a picture of what happens on small and large scale when we relate more nonmonogamously, and what choices we can make in that regard.”

Stroking an animal – Nederlandse premiere – Ángel FilgueiraMariña (23) krijgt een intense liefdesrelatie met Ada (25). Wanneer Tomás (27), een gedeelde vriend, binnen de relatie treedt, veranderen de fysieke en emotionele verhoudingen. De film bestaat uit zes momenten in deze relatie, op de kijker geprojecteerd als lichtflitsen. De ontwikkeling van deze driehoeksverhouding laat Mariña haar banden met anderen en zichzelf herzien.

Ze willen hun polyamoreuze relatie officieel maken, maar een overal aanwezige MPAA-censor staat het niet toe — niet zonder ingrijpende aanpassingen. Geconfronteerd met het idee dat hun liefdevolle relatie wordt gezien als ongepast voor het grote publiek, moet de familie een keuze maken: houden ze zich aan de wensen van de MPAA om mogelijk relaties zoals die van hen op het grote scherm vertegenwoordigd zien, of blijven ze trouw aan hun authentieke zelf? Moeten ze zich aanpassen aan het systeem of het systeem juist verwerpen?

Na de film Stroking An Animal volgt een spraakmakende lezing over hoe autonoom meerdere relaties aangaan een immens radicaal potentieel heeft. Roos Reijbroek, werkzaam als relatietherapeut voor polyamoristen en organisator van De Meerminners, schetst een beeld van wat er gebeurt op kleine en grote schaal wanneer we meer nonmonogaam relateren, en welke keuzes we daarin kunnen maken.
