Movie - Tom of Finland (2017) + Intro (UQCF)

Behind the iconic drawings of Tom of Finland lies the incredible story of the Finnish artist Touko Laaksonen, who returns home traumatized after WWII.

This film is part of the Utrecht Queer Culture Festival. Leather Social Utrecht provides an introduction to this program.

His own war begins when he has to hide his homosexuality. He is completely absorbed in his art and draws muscular men in uniforms, with shiny boots, protruding nipples and titanic penises. Karukoski succeeds in capturing the essence of the man in this portrait of one of the most influential artists in gay culture.

With his homoerotic art he made an essential contribution to the emancipation of gays in the twentieth century.

Zijn eigen oorlog begint wanneer hij zijn homoseksualiteit moet verbergen. Hij gaat volledig op in zijn kunst en tekent gespierde mannen in uniformen, met blinkende laarzen, uitstekende tepels en titanische penissen. Karukoski slaagt erin de essentie van de man te vangen in dit portret van een van de meest invloedrijke kunstenaars uit de gaycultuur.

Met zijn homo-erotische kunst heeft hij een essentiële bijdrage geleverd aan de emancipatie van de homo’s in de twintigste eeuw.
