Out in Tech Amsterdam | AI for Good: Myth or Reality?

Out in Tech is the world’s largest non-profit community of LGBTQ+ tech leaders, creating opportunities for our 45,000 members to advance their careers, grow their networks, and leverage tech for social change - and we’re growing our chapter in Amsterdam!

We are keen to invite you to join us for a thought-provoking exploration into the realms of AI ethics and practices led by panellists from our community! Let's scratch our hands and "hmm" together while discussing what AI means and can be for LGBTQIA+ people.

We asked our panellists to let go and use this opportunity to share something they usually hesitate to share. So it might get spicy 🌶️

About our speakers:

• Rafael Wlodarski. (He/Him). Our moderator, has been working as a Data Scientist for over 8 years at various small and large-scale tech companies, often building or using Machine Learning models to address various business problems. Previous to working in tech, I was a lecturer and researcher in Experimental Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Oxford. He recently came across a great quote that he thinks neatly summarises the role that 'AI' is likely to play in industry in the immediate future: "AI will not replace people, but people who know how to use AI will replace people who don't."

• Lian Li (She/They). Lian always wanted to save the world. After dropping out of law school, she decided to work with computers instead. While in Web Development, she started attending and speaking at tech events on the topic of machine learning, and soon fell in love with the tech community. For a year, Lian worked in a startup, building an AI solution for curated newsfeeds. Since then, Lian combined technical knowledge with an understanding of the human condition in her roles as Developer, Consultant, and Developer Advocate. Currently, Lian lives in Amsterdam, where she serves as Tech Lead for the CNCF TAG app-delivery. She can also be seen on stage at various English-speaking musical theatre productions, doing standup comedy and improv theatre. “Any solution is only as good as your framing of the problem”, this is what we need to keep in mind when applying AI.
• Masuma Shahid (She/Her). Lecturer and researcher in the field of LGBTQ+ rights at the Erasmus School of Law in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In her latest research, she researched the positive and negative ways in which AI applications have affected the LGBTQ+ community. "Although the development of AI may improve the lives of many, it brings significant risks to the lives of LGBTQ+ people specifically that need to be addressed immediately by developers and regulators."
• Nico Nosal (She/They). Researcher and Strategist who once led all Insights at Polaroid and now helps tech-for-good start-ups leverage AI in topics like sustainability, accessibility or research. "AI is like electricity! It makes great things possible, but without regulation and oversight, it's bound to shock and burn!"
• Sandra Heinzen (She/Her). Innovation Design Lead at Salesforce. Blending 16+ years in design and innovation with a zest for AI and speculative business design she is shaping futures for financial services companies at Salesforce. From frog design to financial futurism, her mission is to democratize AI, making it a tool for empowerment and change. "AI for good isn't a myth; it's the reality we're crafting. It's about amplifying human potential and breaking boundaries — and I'm here for it."

Over onze sprekers:

Rafael Wlodarski. (Hij/Hem). Onze moderator, werkt al meer dan 8 jaar als Data Scientist bij diverse kleine en grote techbedrijven, vaak bouwend aan of gebruikmakend van Machine Learning modellen om verschillende bedrijfsproblemen aan te pakken. Voordat hij in de tech werkte, was hij docent en onderzoeker in Experimentele Psychologie en Neurowetenschap aan de Universiteit van Oxford. Hij kwam onlangs een geweldige quote tegen die hij denkt dat netjes de rol samenvat die 'AI' waarschijnlijk op korte termijn in de industrie zal spelen: "AI zal mensen niet vervangen, maar mensen die weten hoe ze AI moeten gebruiken, zullen mensen vervangen die dat niet doen."

Lian Li (Zij/Hen). Lian wilde altijd al de wereld redden. Nadat ze gestopt was met de rechtenstudie, besloot ze in plaats daarvan met computers te werken. Terwijl ze in Webontwikkeling werkte, begon ze tech-evenementen bij te wonen en te spreken over het onderwerp machine learning, en werd al snel verliefd op de techgemeenschap. Een jaar lang werkte Lian in een startup, aan een AI-oplossing voor samengestelde nieuwsfeeds. Sindsdien combineerde Lian technische kennis met een begrip van de menselijke conditie in haar rollen als Ontwikkelaar, Consultant en Developer Advocate. Momenteel woont Lian in Amsterdam, waar ze dient als Tech Lead voor de CNCF TAG app-levering. Ze is ook te zien op het podium bij diverse Engelstalige muziektheaterproducties, doet aan stand-up comedy en improvisatietheater. “Elke oplossing is slechts zo goed als je formulering van het probleem”, dit moeten we in gedachten houden bij het toepassen van AI.

In haar laatste onderzoek onderzocht ze de positieve en negatieve manieren waarop AI-toepassingen de LGBTQ+ gemeenschap hebben beïnvloed. "Hoewel de ontwikkeling van AI het leven van velen kan verbeteren, brengt het significante risico's met zich mee voor het leven van LGBTQ+ mensen specifiek die onmiddellijk moeten worden aangepakt door ontwikkelaars en regelgevers."

Van frog design tot financieel futurisme, haar missie is om AI te democratiseren, waardoor het een instrument wordt voor empowerment en verandering. "
